Olympic of the Pops; Barton o’ Fun; OXJAM kick-off; Cats. Yes, cats.

I’m off to the Olympics tomorrow, and a weekend in Kent, where I lived for a few years before the Call of Beestonia led me to return to the NG9. A whole barrage of stuff needs mentioning, so I’ll Ursain Bolt into the first bit of this:

Thanks to all who pointed out the other Beeston links to the Olympics: so salutes to Humber Road Women’s Volleyball hero Grace Carter, who have performed superbly in the first week. They are wayyyy outsiders for a medal, presently something like 78th in the world rankings, but have already well out-performed expectations.

I also was informed that the Australian judo squad trained in Beeston on July 16th, their first port of call after landing in the country that day. They visited the highly successful Rycroft Judo Club to get in a bit of post-flight stretching, and I’ll post a pic of this soonish. Have a cap? The doff it.

However, if you have a shoe, throw it at our other connection to the Olympics: Atos. The Beeston branch, which sits like a warehouse of evil by the train station, is providing a lot of the timings for the games: see Councillor Barber’s comment below for more info. They are also one of the sponsors of the games, as well as the Paralympics, which certainly takes the gold for taking the piss. Unsure why? Here’s just one of a thousand reasons: clickyevilsods .

Any more links? Keep ’em coming!

Barton House

Much as I’m delighted to go and have a gander at what happens when you mix £9,000,000,000 with a sportsday, I’m a bit miffed that i’ll be missing the events this weekend at Barton House. Saturday sees a real coup for their monthly acoustic nights, with the splendid melancholic folky sounds of Troubador Rose playing a set, straight after a visit to Broadway cinema in town, where they will be playing the premiere of the highly-anticipated Brit-flick they’ve just soundtracked, ‘Strawberry Fields’. As I’ll be too busy gallivanting round the South East to catch them, I need loads of you to go down and represent the Beestonia Massive. Up for it? Then get your lucky arses down the Guitar Spot for tickets, or click along to here . But are they cocktails, Lord B? Oh yes. And all manner of alcoholic happiness from the in-house bar.

Then on Sunday, there’s another indoor market, an event I cannot recommend enough, despite the fact the last two were dampened, literally, by crap rainy weather. Stuff for kids, live music, eclectic stalls and best of all, a homemade sweet-stall, it’s a corker of a day out and will set you back all of £0.00 to get in. What you spend on rhubarb & custard boiled sweets in those little twisty paper bags though, is up to you.

I’d also mention the Comedy Club on Thursday, but I’d be spoiling you. You’ll have to wait for me to bang on about it next week. One piece of advice though: stock up on plastic pants now, to avoid any laughter-based accidents.

OXJAM kicks off!

Just a brief mention – the prelimary handball match between Laos and the Marshall Islands is just about to start on BBC red button, and I MUST watch it- but I’m uber-chuffed to announce that the Beeston Oxjam Festival Campaign is now officially underway. I need not explain too much if you attended last year, but if you somehow managed to find something better to do, like being given a croggie by Bradley Wiggins, or producing the opening ceremony from the Olympics (when Beestonia does get independance, then the Olympics, I’m getting Shane Meadows to do the opening ceremony for us. The skinhead element might keep that utter toss-bucket Aiden ‘Third-Reich’ Burley momentarily happy. Then we’ll do something about our incredibly harmonious diversity and he’ll implode), then I best start stealing your ears and shouting loudly down them.

This year, we intend to raise £5,000 while also showing the rest of Notts how downright utterly cool at stuff we are. Beeston, Nottingham’s cultural quarter? Nah, let’s do better than that. Let’s show Britain that Nottingham is Beeston’s shopping and hen-night quarter. Barton House the new Hacienda, The Crown the new Good Mixer, The Stump the new Nelson’s Column, and Beeston Marina the new Camden lock…. watch this space.

But in the meanwhile, ensure you’re subscribed to this blog, check out the Beeston Oxjam Takeover on Facebook/ Twitter and it’s own site here .

We’ll be having the first official fundraiser soon, which will be a pub quiz the likes of never seen before in Beeston. We want YOU to get a team together, and if you run a business, to donate something as prize. I must warn you in advance that I’ll be hosting it, there will be booze, their will be free music, there will be people wandering from it starry-eyed and amazed how corking a pub quiz could be. More to follow. Tremble with anticipation, Beestonians.

To all of you – well, Kerry from the excellent and nomtastic kerrycooks blog – demanded I post a picture of my new kittens (Baroness von Leela Beestonia; Countess Tess d’Beestonaville), here we are:
